Course outline

Singing is a core practice in virtually every spiritual tradition around the world. On this retreat we will move into a rhythm of song, chanting and meditation to feed the soul and to rest and calm our bodies and minds. Our practice will be weaved into the sacred history, ethos and nature of the unique and beautiful location of Holy Isle. Retreat leaders Ben and Martha will guide you through a collection of Zen poems, Taizé harmonies, Hindu devotional chants, Celtic blessings and Tibetan prayers and you’ll have chance to explore your voice in a gently supportive setting and discover ways singing can bring fulfilment and meaning to our lives.

This retreat is suitable for all. Previous singing experience is not necessary and introduction to meditative practice is offered.

Highlights include:

  • Learning simple songs and chants, and singing together in the beautiful Peace Hall.
  • Practicing meditations inspired by the gentle teachings of venerable Zen monk, peace activist and poet Thich Nhat Hanh.
  • Guided contemplative walks to visit the island’s famous caves and rock paintings.
  • A special performance of original story and song from Holy Isle musicians.
  • Open sessions to share (optional) and listen to each other’s songs, stories or poems.
  • Time to slow down, experience and listen to the songs, rhythms and movements of the island.
  • Delicious vegetarian meals prepared with fresh produce from the Holy Isle biodynamic garden.
